Firstly, to get straight to the point, there are many alkalizing wheatgrass benefits from drinking wheatgrass juice and other 'green drinks'
Wheatgrass juice is a dark green drink that is highly alkalizing and nutritious. Other green drinks include a mixture of juices from fresh green vegetables (‘super greens’) and grasses that provide a greater concentration of easily and quickly usable alkaline salts, vitamins, minerals, amino acids (the building blocks of proteins) and chlorophyll to the body, when consumed.
Green powders are freeze-dried powder forms of green vegetables, sprouts and grasses that can be mixed with water and drank or taken as capsules. They are freeze-dried at low temperatures, so they retain all of their nutrients and also their fibre.
The key ingredients of these are (organic) wheatgrass, barley grass and kamut grass. Good quality powders may also contain a variety of vegetables and sprouts, such as spinach, kale, alfalfa, broccoli and even things such as sage, ginger, garlic and dandelion, so check the ingredients before you purchase green drink powders.
What is wheatgrass?
Wheatgrass is the luscious green grass that comes from the very young wheat plant. It is harvested early and considered a vegetable. If left to grow, it forms a shaft of wheat and produces a grain – a very different food altogether.
Wheatgrass juice is said to be a ‘complete’ food, containing all of the vitamins and most of the minerals needed by the human body for health and well-being, as well as 80 protein enzymes. It has no toxic side effects and is approximately 70% crude chlorophyll – the rich, green life blood of plants.
It is widely regarded as one of nature’s superfoods. Wheatgrass juice and wheatgrass powder (mixed greens powders) are recommended as excellent supplements to an alkaline diet.
Unlike our bovine friends the cows, humans can’t eat wheat grass as a whole food. It contains a high concentration of cellulose, making it fibrous and woody and indigestible to our very long intestines, so we must extract the juice.
easily online or grow it and juice it yourself!
and juicing it yourself requires a bit of effort, as well as a
manual wheatgrass juicer
(you can’t use a normal juicer), wheatgrass seeds and trays and also a bit of space!
It is very fun and rewarding though to see the succulent blades of green grass after only 7-10 days and it can work out very cheap in the long run. Also, you have the joy of drinking your own organic, supremely fresh juice, grown with your own fair hands! ☺
Alkaline Diet Health Tip: Wheatgrass is gluten-free. People who have wheat and gluten allergies are generally not affected adversely by wheatgrass in its young grass form. It is, of course, advisable to consult your doctor if you do have a wheat allergy before you use wheatgrass as a supplement.
